Annual Spring Banquet, April 20, 2007

Students, faculty and staff of the Ralph E. Martin Department of Chemical Engineering enjoyed a good time in celebration of the end of the semester -- complete with awards and entertainment.

Dr. Karl Schubert, CTO and Vice President of Xiotech Corporation, was the guest speaker for the evening, and Karl talked about how he came to be a leader in the technology industry from his start in chemical engineering. Several members of Karl's family were present including his father, David W. Schubert, and his sister and her husband, Dr. Carol Gattis and Dr. Jim Gattis. Karl got to surprise his father David with the announcement of an undergraduate scholarship endowment established in his honor – the David W. Schubert Endowed Scholarship in Chemical Engineering, and this scholarship went to Andrew Wolfe.

Other department scholarships were announced including: the Elizabeth Babcock & Mary Francis Kelly Endowed Fund Scholarship in Chemical Engineering was awarded to Cristina Satterfield and Joel Vincent. Samantha Ostia was awarded the Tracey L. Kirn Scholarship. The Arkansas Academy of Chemical Engineers Scholarship was awarded to Luis Jimenez. Timothy Meyer received the Troy Barnhart Memorial Endowed Award in Chemical Engineering: The Philip E. Bocquet Memorial Endowed Scholarship was awarded to Vincent Hall. Nathan Dawley and James Turner were each awarded scholarships from the Kate Hadley and Grace Baker Endowment in Chemical Engineering. The Robert Lee and Mabel Nott Maddox Scholarship in Chemical Engineering was awarded to Andrew Moore. Ashley Smith received the Walter Wycliffe and Lucille Rankin Owen Endowed Scholarship in Chemical Engineering. Ralph E. Martin Department of Chemical Engineering Alumni Scholarships were awarded to Jose Aguayo-Herrera, Stephen Moses, Soparkoithapong Vasin, and Anh Vu. Lori Scritchfield received the Jim Turpin Endowed Scholarship in Chemical Engineering.

Andrew Kincannon was recognized as the Outstanding Senior Chemical Engineering Student.

The WERC Design Competition teams were honored for their first place showing and receipt of the ORAU Environmental Improvement Realization Award. The teams were "Zero Discharge" Team including Meredith Bruick, Matt Correnti, Heath Himstedt, Seth Huber, Andrew Kincannon, and Mai Sayarath, and the "Making America Natural Using Renewable Energy" (MANURE) Team including Melissa Buckmaster, Rory Bradney, Cole Colville, Steven Jennings, Latosha Johnson, and Betty Phansiri. The team faculty sponsors, Dr. Roy Penney and Dr. Greg Thoma, were thanked by the students for their efforts as was George Fordyce who built the demonstration units for both teams.

Outstanding faculty members were also recognized. Colonel William Myers was recognized for his service to students. Dr. Ed Clausen was recognized for his outstanding work in the classroom. Dr. Jerry King was recognized for his successful research program.

The evening was capped off when students presented a video poking fun at the faculty -- which had some really funny parts to it.
