As part of the AIChE activities, 45 chemical engineering students and their advisor toured the Eastman Chemical facilities in Longview, Texas, on March 3 and 4, 2005. Eastman was a gracious host, providing a large portion of the travel expenses. The group had a bus tour of the facilities, with stops at a cracking plant, where alkanes are cracked to form ethylene and propylene, and a polyethylene plant, where two processes for making polyethylene were observed. The tour ended with a panel discussion of career opportunities and how internships and co-ops enhance undergraduate’s experience and future career possibilities; the panel was composed of U of A chemical engineering alumni.
