First Grade Children from Salem Lutheran School Visit the Department

The department in cooperation with the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Alpha Chi Sigma hosted the first grade class from Salem Lutheran School in Springdale on 2 November 2005. Colonel William Myers and Dr. Al Silano welcomed 17 first graders and their teachers. After a safety briefing where the eager future engineers were provided safety glasses for wear in the lab, the students learned about properties of polymers specifically why some are ductile and some are brittle, and then witnessed failure tests on polymer specimens. The students went to another lab where each student experimented with creating their own polymer, popularly known as "slime", which is made from diluted white glue and borax. Finally, the students made ice cream from cream, flavoring, and liquid nitrogen. A great time was had by all.
