Dr. Clausen's research interests are in bioprocess engineering and the conversion and extraction of biomass to yield value-added products. He has been involved with biomass conversion to chemicals and energy since 1974, and is presently working with Bioengineering Resources on a pilot scale gasification/fermentation process to produce ethanol from biomass. In addition, he is investigating the extraction of nutraceuticals from energy crops and other plant materials or wastes using conventional extraction as well as extraction with subcritical water, the production of hydrogen by fermentation, the production of biodiesel from vegetable oils and animal fats, and carbon dioxide sequestration in cell biomass.
Dr. Clausen is an active consultant, with 11 patents and nearly 500 technical publications and presentations to his credit. He is a member of AIChE, ACS, ASEE, the Institute of Biological Engineering, the Society for Biological Engineering and the Southern Alliance for the Utilization of Biomass Resources (SAUBR).
